The lights are bright and the fans are cheering. The cameras are rolling and the time is now. The girls in the Miss Texas Teen pageant hold their winning smiles while waiting anxiously for the moment of truth…a moment that could change their life.

Junior Liberty Belle officer Makenna Spencer is getting the opportunity of a lifetime this fall. Selected to represent Spring in the Miss Texas Teen beauty Pageant, Spencer begins to prepare for her day in the spotlight in front of thousands.

“I have been wanting to do a pageant for a long time now, so I researched different ones that are going on this year and found the very prestigious Miss Texas Teen USA pageant! I sent in an application with a headshot of myself included and was selected to represent Spring, Texas in the pageant,” Spencer said.

Many people with experience in beauty pageants recommended that Spencer compete in smaller, local pageants for practice before she took on the intensity and responsibility of a larger one.

“I am participating in three pageants total. Two of them are local pageants called prelims, and then I will go to the state pageant. I am doing Miss Kemah Teen USA which is in April. After that I will participate in Miss Bay Area Teen in July. The largest one, Miss Texas Teen USA, is in November. Though I am excited for all three of the pageants, I’d have to say that I am looking forward to the one in November the most,” Spencer said.

Spencer has learned that the beauty pageant life doesn’t come cheap. With a combination of entrance fees, photo costs, and clothing, it is very expensive.

“To confirm my position in the state pageants was $195. The pageant dresses range anywhere from $800 to $3,000. The swimwear can cost between $80 and $400. The glamour headshots were about $560, and to enter the pageant it is $1,095. On the plus side, I can get a sponsor to help pay for some of the expenses. My parents have been such a big help to give me this opportunity. They are willing to pay for whatever I need to win, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Spencer said.

Because Spencer is new to pageants, she’s having to learn all of the tricks of the trade from coaches that she has hired and former pageant contestants that know what it takes to win.

“I am preparing for my pageants with my coach Ms. Milner and my fitness trainer Mr. Damon. They have both spent a significant amount of time working with girls participating in beauty pageants. I absolutely love them. I know that they want the best for me and that they’re willing to do whatever it takes and work with me every minute of the way. I have also been talking with the current Miss Texas USA, Brittany Booker, and her advice was to work really hard and stay dedicated all the way through. She told me to set goals for myself and to work towards my dream. At the pageant I need to be myself, let go, and have fun. That is how I plan to shine,” Spencer said.

In order to participate in a beauty pageant with such a large title, preparation begins months in advance for the contestants.

“The competition is based on poise, personality, intelligence, and beauty. The three categories that I will actually be judged on is my personal interview, my swimsuit attire, and my evening attire. I have already been altering my lifestyle and what I do everyday in order to meet the requirements I need to win. Fitness is huge in this pageant system, so I have Damon to get me in tip top shape before the pageant day. I also need to be prepared to wear high heels when I am walking on stage, so my coach insisted that I wear them at least three times a week to school and around my house,” Spencer said.

Spencer knows what she needs to do in order to win the pageants and prizes that come along with them, and she intends to do whatever it takes to make that happen.

“It’s going to take lots of hard work, dedication, determination, and practice if I am going to be successful in these pageants and I am willing to go the full nine yards. I am not in the competition with anybody but myself. If I am crowned Miss Texas Teen USA, I have the honor of representing the great state of Texas. In addition, I am awarded over $55,000, college scholarships, jewelry, a new wardrobe, paid travel destinations, and I will get to make personal appearances throughout the year. If I am crowned it will be such a great experience and open up countless opportunities for me. I have been truly blessed,” Spencer said.
