The dancers touch up their make up, pin on their numbers, and stretch one last time. Practicing for a week in advance, it all comes down to this. Last Saturday, Liberty Belles Dance and Drill Team held their try outs to see who would be on the 2012-2013 team. The officers of the team have a bigger responsibility and the try out process for them is more complicated than just a regular team member.

In order to try out for an officer position, candidates must have been a Belle for at least one year, try out for the team, and also troupe. Candidates fill out in-depth application, learn two dances, choreograph a solo and go through a face to face interview.

“My favorite part of try outs, overall, is learning all of the dances, it pushes me to do things I didn’t think I could. My least favorite part will probably be the interview with the judges, I am just kind of nervous,” Sophomore, Mary Knight said.

After a long day of try outs, dancing, and interviews, the new 2012-2013 Liberty Belles Officers are Colonel, Makenna Spencer, Lt. Colonel, Kendall Nettleton, Majors, Brittany Northern and Melody Ramsey, and Lieutenants, Kate Sauter, Kristen Forsythe, Mary Knight, and Tori Blair.

“The hardest part of tryouts for me was the interview because it was really nerve racking and I wanted to answer all of the questions correctly,” Sophomore, Melody Ramsey said.

For many of the officers, they have been dancing for years and have been looking forward to this day for a long time.

“I have been dancing since second grade, so that’s eight years now. As an officer I will really try to set a good example and help the team get as close to perfection as possible,” Sophomore, Tori Blair said.

Dancing is a form of art to some people and the Liberty Belle Officers all love to dance but they each have their own personal reason as to why.

“Dancing is my get away. I do it when I am upset, or when I am happy and just let out all of my feelings. I couldn’t live without it,” Blair said.
