The War Eagle Band has been competing in four competitions this month with another this weekend, making a fierce comeback compared to previous years.
The band started the streak when they played at the USSBA Houston Regional Competition at Spring High School and competed in the 5A division on Friday, October 9. Out of four other bands in their division, the Oak Ridge band scored first place, and second overall to Brazoswood out of all 13 bands.
“It didn’t surprise me that we won. We had a great run of our show,” Assistant Band Director, Albert Vela said.
The Lone Star Preview was held at Woodforest Stadium on Saturday, October 16. Out of 26 total bands that competed, the Oak Ridge Band placed 5th overall. After not even making the top 10 last year, the band made a significant improvement and set themselves up for success at the UIL competitions.
“I was very pleased with 5th place. It’s the highest place the band has ever received at this competition,” Band Director, Jack Allen said.
On October 19, the band played at the regional UIL competition and received first division scores, which allowed them to advance to the Area competition that was held last Saturday.
“I was expecting the band to receive first division scores at UIL. They have been working hard all year,” Allen said.
Although the band did not place in the top six at UIL area, which means they won’t be advancing to state. However, the USSBA State Competition is still to come on Saturday, October 30.
“I was expecting the band to do well at area. But you never know, nothing is a ‘gimme’ in this sport,” Allen said.
