Students rarely get the chance to experience life on the other side of the school system. However, several students got the opportunity to tour the CISD Administration building with Superintendent, Dr. Don Stockton last month.
“I went to the Administration Building with Tanya Crowe on March 1. Only two students from each high school in the district get to go, including Hauke. I was glad I attended because it gave me the chance to get more familiar with the school system,” Senior, Betsy Clark said.
The students got the chance to shadow Dr. Stockton’s job for the day and ask him questions about what he does.
“The tour lasted most of the day, from about ten in the morning to one-thirty in the afternoon. While we were there, we followed him as he gave us a tour the building and we had lunch with him. At lunch, we were able to ask him questions about his job and how he got to be where he is now. Also on the tour, we met a lot of people who worked there,” Clark said.
The students were nominated by the school counselors based on their achievement and what they want to major in.
“All of the counselors got together and thought of students that we felt would be most qualified to go. Betsy Clark was picked because she is a great student and wants to pursue a career in education when she grows up, so I thought this would be a wonderful experience for her,” Counselor, Lisa Algaze said.
On the trip, the students learned a lot about what really goes on in the education system.
“There’s a lot more people who work at the district level than I realized. It is the largest work force in the Montgomery County area. Also, most everyone that works there is a former teacher or is married to a teacher,” Clark said.
Going on this trip helped the students get more acquainted with the possible career options that they want to pursue.
“When I grow up, I want to be an elementary teacher, so this experience showed me all of the other people that are involved in teaching, even though they don’t teach. Also, hearing Dr. Stockton’s stories made me think about how you can set your goal on being one thing, but there is always room to excel when you reach that goal,” Clark said.
This was a great experience that helped the students see what goes on in the Administration Building.
“It was an honor to be chosen and I really learned a lot about the school system and that there is a bigger picture to everything,” Clark said.
The students enjoyed many different thing about the experience.
“My favorite part was when we got sit down and eat lunch with him. The lunch was delicious and Dr. Stockton opened up with us and told us about his experiences growing up and how he became Superintendant. Especially since he is a very busy person, it was nice getting to know him more and just being able to ask him questions,” Clark said.
