The start of a new journey began, when Senior Michael Handy decided to commit to Lamar University.
There were a couple reasons why Handy choose Lamar.
“They gave me an opportunity that no other college gave me, other colleges slept on me,” Handy said.
Handy was truly happy to sign the papers to commit to Lamar.
“I felt very happy and excited, it’s been something I’ve been waiting on my whole life, it takes me another step closer to reaching my goal,” Handy said.
Handy feels playing high school football has really prepared him for Lamar.
“I feel like it’s going to help me be more successful, because I’ve learned the fundamental of the game and even multiple positions,” Handy said.
Lamar has big plans for Handy when they start football.
“They gave me a full ride, so the coach basically said I will be possibly starting as a receiver and maybe play some as a running back,” Handy said.
Handy believes that he will be on the field soon for the team.
“My freshman year I will be on the field in red, white, and black,” Handy said.
Handy has already started preparing for the start of the season.
“Coach sent me a workout book, so I will be following that until June when I go back there,” Handy said.
Handy is going to miss some things about playing football at Oak Ridge.
“The thinks I’m going to miss are my friends, the pep rallies, and the cheerleaders,” Handy said.
But also Handy is looking forward to the experience of college.
“I’m looking forward to playing, meeting new people, learning more about another environment, and expanding my knowledge,” Handy said.
Handy feels that he can be a big help to the Lamar football team.
“I think I will be a positive effect on the team, on either side of the ball,” Handy said.
Handy really like’s the style of the Lamar coaching staff.
“They’re legit, their straight forward, and they don’t mess around,” Handy said.
Lamar University is not that far from home for Handy.
“It’s in Beaumont, Texas, and is an hour and 45 minutes away from home,” Michael Handy said.
Handy also plans on getting his major in business at the university.
“I want to major in business, because my family has taken me through those steps already in life,” Handy said.
After college Handy has some big plans in mind for himself.
“My dream is to to enter the NFL draft, and have my own family restaurant,” Handy said.
